Before we jump into the recap, in looking at the week thus far, despite the weak index-level action, under the hood, upside participation has actually been quite strong, with the majority of factors positive on the week and Growth being the only factor currently in negative territory. Meanwhile, Small Cap Value and Private Equity have been among the best-performing factors on the week.

And in regard to the specific factors and or ‘baskets’ we’ve built on Plutus, here are the best performers year-to-date:

1. Industrial and Auto Analog Recovery

3. Google Ecosystem

4. AI Full-Stack Infrastructure

5. Agentic Economy

Whereas on the flip side, the worst performing baskets year-to-date have been:

1. The Global Marketplace

2. Gaming & Media

3. Make Housing Great Again

Moving along, although there’s been a violent momentum unwind within Tech, given other pockets of the market have been lifted up as liquidity has dispersed elsewhere outside of the AI trade, upside participation in general has picked up by quite the margin & as a result, 49% of stocks still remain above the 20D despite the Q’s being in roughly an 8% drawdown and even Spooz sitting in nearly a 5% drawdown.

And similar can be said on a more broader timeframe, although this week, we have seen a slight deterioration but as of now, 50% of stocks still remain above the 50D, which isn’t necessarily an overbought & or oversold reading & instead still paints a more neutral picture.

That said, despite indices being just off the highs & the Q’s being within a mild correction, the Fear-Greed Index has already made its way back into ‘fear’ territory & is quickly encroaching on ‘extreme fear’ territory; again, emphasizing that markets still remain far from ‘true euphoria’ or the type of positioning extremes typically associated with major interim tops.

Jumping straight into it, up until Friday, it was generally a quieter week before a VaR shock ended up taking place following the hotter-than-expected jobs report / shift in rate markets further pricing in hikes on Friday, which in turn caused a large unwind within Tech / Momentum & the ‘Growth’ factor in general, thus leading the Q’s to be the worst performer on the week, closing lower by 450bps, whereas the Dow was the ‘best’ performing of the indices, although it essentially closed flat on the week, lower by 21bps.

- Economic Data for the Coming Week:

In regard to economic data heading into the upcoming week, excluding geopolitics, the biggest event of the week is Wednesday’s CPI report along with PPI #'s on Thursday, but otherwise, it’s a quieter week on the economic data front.

Before we jump into the week ahead, looking back at this past week, as we highlighted earlier, but up until Friday, on the headline index level, it was generally a quieter week before we then ended up seeing a large decline in the ‘Momentum’ factor on Friday, which originally was higher by over 5% on the week before then closing lower by just under 50bps. Otherwise, throughout the week, both Growth & Momentum factor strength faded, and the week was more so characterized by a rotation into Value / Low-Volatility, which were the best-performing factors on the week.

And in regard to the specific factors and or ‘baskets’ we’ve built on Plutus, here are the best performers year-to-date:

Moving along, despite the indices being just off the highs following Friday’s VaR shock, the % of Stocks Above the 20D, interestingly enough, is starting to encroach back into oversold territory, with it currently sitting at 46%.

And similar can be said on a broader timeframe, although for now, the % of Stocks Above the 50D, currently sitting at 49%, is still signaling more neutral conditions.

That being said, we’re back to the phenomenon where the indices are just off the highs, yet the Fear-Greed Index has worked its way back into ‘Fear’ territory despite the S&P, for example, being down less than 300bps from ATHs, which again more so emphasizes that markets still remain far away from true ‘euphoria’ or the type of positioning extremes typically associated with major tops.

Jumping straight into it, looking back at this past week, it was mostly characterized by the positive progression in talks between the U.S. & Iran as we inched closer and closer to a deal between the two, ultimately leading to an “everything rally” as bond volatility continued to ease given the general unwind in Crude to the downside.

That said, of the indices, the Q’s were the best performing of the group, closing higher by just under 300bps, whereas the Dow was the “worst” performing of the group, yet still closed higher by just under 100bps on the week as the historic rally across the board to fresh new highs continued.

In regard to economic data heading into the upcoming week, excluding geopolitics, the calendar is largely scattered with a variety of labor market datapoints, with Friday’s NFP report being the most important release of the week but outside of that, there’s just a broad mix of jobs-related and economic data sprinkled throughout the week.

Moving along, despite the indices having made fresh all-time highs across the board this past week, in the shorter term, overall conditions are still generally neutral as just 54% of stocks remain above the 20D, which again, more so emphasizes the lack of overall upside participation, but this past week, that did start to improve given the ‘everything rally’ that took place.

And on a broader timeframe, the same can be said too as just 58% of stocks remain above the 50D, which still isn’t necessarily signaling overbought conditions either and instead remains a much more neutral reading, which ultimately just further emphasizes that the most recent leg of this rally has been considerably narrower in respect to overall upside participation, although it has finally started to broaden out.

All things being said, despite the major indices having closed out this past week at fresh all-time highs as the record run off the late March lows continues, it’s been impressive to see the Fear-Greed Index remain relatively muted and even slowly inch back toward ‘Neutral,’ which more so emphasizes that markets still remain far away from true ‘euphoria’ or the type of positioning extremes typically associated with major tops.

I hope you’re all enjoying the long weekend and getting some time away from the screens & wishing you all a successful remainder of ‘26.

Jumping straight into it, looking back at this past week, after an initial wobble earlier in the week following speculation that the U.S. may look to escalate against Iran, alongside the sharp rise in bond volatility, Trump ultimately decided not to follow through with the supposed planned attack, which practically marked the bottom for markets on the week & from there, indices continued rallying into the latter half of the week.

On the week, Small Caps ended up being the best performing index, closing higher by just over 270bps, largely attributed to the simmering down in bond volatility, which sparked a bit of rotation beneath the surface & meanwhile, Spooz ended up being the ‘worst’ performer of the major indices, yet still managed to close higher by 88bps on the week.

- Economic Data for the Coming Week:

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, excluding geopolitics, again, it’s a shortened week given the holiday, but the biggest datapoint of the week is Thursday’s PCE print, which, as a reminder, is the Fed’s preferred gauge for inflation but outside of that, the week is relatively light, with only a handful of more minor & sporadic datapoints scattered throughout the week.

Excluding IPOs, Small-Cap Value alongside Low-Volatility and Quality ended up being among the best performing factors on the week, whereas Growth was the worst-performing factor and, at that, the only factor that actually closed the week negative as well.

Moving along, despite the indices having practically closed out this past week at ATHs, upside participation has still been a bit lackluster, although we did see an overall improvement this past week, which has more so been reflected in the jump within the % of Stocks Above the 20D, which has now made its way back to 51% (Neutral territory) after having previously fallen down to 35% in shorter-term ‘oversold’ territory.

And on a more broader timeframe, the overall picture looks a tad healthier too, with 57% of stocks remaining above the 50D, but still isn’t necessarily signaling overbought conditions either and instead remains a much more neutral reading.

Ultimately, it just further emphasizes that the most recent leg of this rally has been considerably narrower in respect to overall upside participation.

All the above being said, despite the major indices having essentially closed out this past week at ATHs as the record run off the late March lows continues, it’s been impressive to see the Fear-Greed Index remain relatively muted and even slowly inch back toward ‘Neutral’ out of ‘Greed’ territory, which more so emphasizes that markets still remain far away from true ‘euphoria’ or the type of positioning extremes typically associated with major tops.

For now, the week has largely been characterized by a bit of a post-OPEX “hangover” following some unwinding in crowded longs and shorts, alongside the recent rise in the 10Y & uptick in bond volatility.

That said, in terms of index performance, the Dow has been the strongest performer of the group, currently higher by just shy of 100bps on the week, whereas Spooz has been the ‘worst’ performer, although still sits higher by 28bps on the week.

In the shorter-term, this isn’t signaling a market that’s particularly overbought at all, but rather one that has started to drift toward shorter-term oversold territory.

Although on a broader timeframe, the picture does look a tad healthier, with 55% of stocks still sitting above the 50D, which again, isn’t signaling particularly overbought conditions either and instead remains a much more neutral reading. Ultimately, it just further emphasizes that the most recent leg of this rally has been considerably narrower in respect to overall upside participation.

And although the major indices remain just shy of ATHs and have been on a record run since the lows made in late March, markets still only sit marginally within ‘Greed’ territory and have yet to reach ‘Extreme Greed.’ In fact, following this recent wobble, sentiment has already started to work its way back toward neutral territory once again, as markets still remain far away from true ‘euphoria’ or the type of positioning extremes typically associated with major interim tops.

Looking back at this past week, on the headline index level, it was a relatively quieter week with the majority of the major indices closing roughly flat, excluding Small Caps, which finished lower by just over 230bps.

That said, the week was largely characterized by a couple of sharp momentum unwinds and more importantly, a pickup in bond volatility into the latter half of the week, which ultimately pared back the weekly gains, leading most indices to finish essentially unchanged overall, again, excluding Small Caps.

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, excluding geopolitics, it’s a fairly quiet week ahead with just FOMC minutes on Wednesday, a nothingburger, & then just a few minor datapoints into the latter half of the week, but otherwise, a fairly quiet week ahead on the economic data front.

Before we jump into the week ahead, looking back at this past week, the headline indices again mostly closed relatively unchanged, excluding Small Caps, but in regard to specific factor performance, Low-Volatility along with Growth were among the best performing groups, whereas Small-Cap Value and Private Equity ranked among the worst-performing factors on the week.

And in regard to the specific factors and or ‘baskets’ we’ve built on Plutus, here are the best performers year-to-date:

1. Industrial and Auto Analog Recovery

3. Google Ecosystem

Whereas on the flip side, the worst performing baskets year-to-date have been:

Moving along, despite the continued melt-up within equities, with both the Spooz & the Nasdaq making yet another new ATH this past week, the majority of the recent gains have remained heavily concentrated within Tech & as a result, the % of stocks trading above the 20D has fallen all the way back toward 34%, after being near 80% roughly a month ago, all while the headline indices have continued pushing higher. Essentially, this suggests that under the hood, breadth and overall upside participation have deteriorated fairly rapidly, meaning the market’s continued march to new highs has become increasingly narrow.

That said, on a broader timeframe, the picture remains a bit more neutral, with roughly 49% of stocks still trading above the 50D, comparatively to the much weaker shorter-term signals mentioned above, which are now beginning to encroach on oversold territory.

And although Spooz & the Q’s made yet another new all-time-high this past week & have been on a historic run off the late March lows, markets still only remain within ‘Greed’ territory & haven’t quite reached ‘Extreme Greed,’ & is even starting to work back toward ‘Neutral’ territory:

For starters, to all the Mothers & Wives out there, I hope you all have a fantastic Mother’s Day weekend & know that you’re greatly appreciated. Mothers play a pivotal role & I hope this weekend brings well-deserved recognition and celebration.

Secondly, I hope you’re all enjoying the weekend and getting some time away from the screens & wishing you all a successful remainder of ‘26.

Looking back at this past week, the melt-up in equities, specifically Tech, continued as geopolitical developments remained relatively subdued whilst economic data, for the most part, continued to re-accelerate.

As a result, the lack of negative surprises helped fuel the continued chase higher within equities with the Nasdaq being the best performing of the major indices by quite the margin, closing higher by roughly 550bps on the week, whereas the Dow was among the worst performers, although it still managed to close modestly higher by just over 20bps.

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, it should be an interesting one given both CPI & PPI #’s are being reported against the backdrop of the war in the background & whether or not we’re starting to see some after-effects filter through, & we also have Retail Sales on Friday as well.

Looking back at this past week, it was a relatively quieter one considering the continued back-and-forth geopolitical headlines along with FOMC & majority of the Mag-7 having reported, but on the week, yet again both Spooz & the Nasdaq made new all-time-highs, with the Nasdaq being the best performing of the group, closing higher by just over 150bps on the week whereas the Dow was among the worst performing of the indices, although still closed higher by just over 50bps on the week.

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, the biggest event of the week is Friday’s payroll report, but besides that, there’s just some minor & scattered datapoints throughout the week & barring a geopolitical headline, it should be quieter week all around.

Before we jump into the recap, as we highlighted earlier, following the historic 2-week rally stretch, the indices have largely been in a digestion phase and even on the week, they are only slightly lower / relatively flat, excluding Small caps.

And in regard to factor performance, Low Volatility & Value are among the best performing groups, whereas IPOs along with Private Equity remain the underperformers on the week.

With the recent digestion phase, despite the indices being essentially unchanged over the last two weeks, we have seen a slight deterioration in breadth as the AI factor trade and outperformance within Semiconductors has attracted the majority of capital.

That said, the % of stocks above the 20D has fallen to 49% from just over 80% a couple weeks back, despite the indices remaining unchanged, which further emphasizes this ongoing digestion period and the reset of shorter-term overbought conditions back toward more neutral levels.

And similar can be said on a broader timeframe as well, with just 56% of stocks remaining above the 50D, down from 70% a couple of weeks ago, again highlighting this ongoing digestion period and the reset of shorter-term overbought conditions toward more neutral levels.

And although the indices have mostly been digesting following the recent historic 2-week stretch, markets still remain within ‘Greed’ territory:

Looking back at this past week, despite the back-and-forth geopolitical headlines, outside of Tech, it was largely a digestion week for the indices following the historic 2-week rally stretch.

On the week, the Q’s ended up being the best performing of the indices, closing higher by just over 230bps, whereas the Dow was the ‘worst’ performer, yet only finished lower by just over 40bps.

Before we jump into the recap, on the week thus far, after an initial bout of outperformance from Value, Growth is once again leading, with the spread between the two groups now sitting at just under 80bps on the week:

Although year-to-date, the spread between Value and Growth still sits just over 6%, yet has narrowed from the prior highs near 14%:

And in respect to factor performance on the week thus far, Momentum along with Growth are leading the way, whereas Low Volatility and Value remain the underperformers:

Moving along, with this recent digestion period across the indices over the last few days, we’ve seen conditions ease slightly from more extreme overbought levels, but with roughly 75% of stocks still trading above their 20D, this still remains near the upper end of the five-year range and continues to signal shorter-term overbought conditions:

Although on a broader timeframe, while overbought, conditions are still only modestly overbought rather than extreme, with the percentage of stocks above the 50D currently sitting at 65%:

And following the recent historic 2-week stretch, markets remain within ‘Greed’ territory after having oscillated within ‘Extreme Fear’ & ‘Fear’ territory for practically the last two months:

I hope you’re all enjoying the weekend and getting some time away from the screens & wishing you all a successful remainder of ‘26.

Looking back at this past week, and really the past two weeks, it’s been a historic stretch to say the least, as markets have continued to rally in a vicious manner, practically for the entirety of the stretch with the Nasdaq closing higher for 13 consecutive days, following the continued easing of tensions between the U.S. and Iran, along with growing cooperation with Israel progressing toward a ceasefire with Lebanon.

That said, on the week, the Q’s were the best performing index, rallying just over 600bps, whereas the Dow was the ‘worst’ performer, yet still closed higher by just over 300bps on the week.

- Economic Data for the Coming Week:

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, excluding geopolitics, it’s yet another quiet week ahead, with really the only data of ‘significance’ being retail sales on Tuesday, along with a few other minor sporadic datapoints in between, but otherwise, it’s a relatively quiet week ahead.

Before we jump into the week ahead, looking back at this past week, following the sharp and continued rally within the indices, we saw quite the unwind in the Value/Growth trade, with Growth outperforming Value on the week by just over 400bps:

Although year-to-date, the spread between Value and Growth still sits just over 7%, yet has narrowed from the prior highs near 14%:

And in respect to factor performance but on the week, IPOs along with Private equity were among the best performing groups whereas Low-volatility & High-yield were among the worst performing factors on the week:

And in regard to the specific factors and or ‘baskets’ we’ve built on Plutus, here are the best performers year-to-date:

Moving along, following the large rally in the indices on the week, markets have quickly shifted from oversold to overbought, as the percentage of stocks above the 20D currently sits at 83% after being below 20% just a couple of weeks back:

Although on a broader timeframe, while overbought, conditions are more modestly overbought rather than extreme, with the percentage of stocks above the 50D currently sitting at 69%:

And following the recent historic 2-week stretch, markets have finally worked their way into ‘Greed’ territory after having oscillated within ‘Extreme Fear’ and ‘Fear’ territory for practically the last two months:

Before we jump into the week ahead, looking back at this past week, despite the sharp rally in the indices following the announcement of a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, the spread between Growth & Value remained relatively contained, at just around an 80bps spread.

But on the year, the spread between Growth and Value has continued to widen, although has narrowed slightly more recently but still sits at just over 11%, down from 14%:

And another look in respect to factor performance but on the week, Momentum along with Spin-offs were among the best performing groups whereas Low-volatility & Private Equity were among the worst performing factors on the week:

That being said, following the large rally within the indices on the week, in the shorter-term, markets have quickly shifted from oversold to encroaching overbought as the % of stocks above the 20D currently sits at 68% after being below 20% just the other week:

Although on a more broader timeframe, the overall picture still leans more neutral in respect to readings as just 50% of stocks currently remain above the 50D, which again emphasizes a market that has worked out of oversold territory, but on a broader timeframe general conditions still lean more neutral, whereas in the shorter-term as we mentioned just above, are encroaching overbought territory:

And what’s even more interesting is despite the recent sharp snapback within the indices, the fear-greed index still remains in ‘fear’ territory despite Spooz for example being just 220bps off all-time highs.

And with that being said, last week’s ceasefire certainly caught many off guard as leading up into April, in March, we saw the largest net selling in over a decade and among the most aggressive since ‘11, while hedge funds were net sellers for a fourth straight month, cutting exposure at the fastest pace in 13-years:

And at the same time, funds have held onto high-conviction longs whilst aggressively hedging through index and ETF shorts, pushing macro short exposure to the highest levels since COVID:

And more notably, hedge funds have aggressively increased short exposure, pushing their long/short ratio to the most bearish level on record, even exceeding the extremes seen during the Liberation Day selloff:

And on the argument that individuals were long and simply hoping for a ceasefire, that certainly wasn’t the case, and even despite the rally last week, there still wasn’t much re-grossing, as equity positioning remains well into underweight territory, although it did tick slightly higher this past week:

Another graphic emphasizing this dynamic, whilst also including earnings consensus, which has continued to tick higher despite the volatility, whereas again, equity positioning remains well into underweight territory:

And lastly, from McElligott, we’ve had a very ‘overhedged’ market, and as the charts show below, the market was under-hedged for the right tail and over-hedged for the left tail, which again emphasizes that not many individuals were positioned for a ceasefire, and if the upside action continues, given positioning dynamics, it could certainly force a chase and re-grossing as individuals worry about underperforming the benchmark and missing a Liberation Day–type rally off the lows.

Looking back at this past week, after initially declining earlier in the week, the decline ended up marking the bottom in the indices before a rally ensued through the remainder of the week as Trump stated the U.S. would leave the Middle East without the Strait of Hormuz opened, while marine traffic through Hormuz also started to pick up in the latter half of the week.

That being said, the Q’s ended up being the best performing of the indices, having closed higher by 397bps, whereas the Dow was among the ‘worst’ performing of the indices, yet still closed higher by just over 300bps on the week.

- Economic Data for the Coming Week:

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, excluding geopolitics, the most important release will be PCE on Thursday, given it is the Fed’s preferred gauge for inflation, along with CPI on Friday, but besides that, we just have a few more minor scattered datapoints throughout the week as well.

Before jumping into the week ahead, looking back at this past week, in terms of factor performance, Momentum ended up being the best performing group whereas High Dividend Yield & Low-Volatility ended up being the worst performing groups on the week:

And on the week, given the snapback rally within the indices, Growth ended up outperforming Value on the week with the spread between the two groups sitting just under 150bps:

Although on the year, the spread between Value and Growth has continued to widen, although slightly narrowed this past week with the spread between the two groups down to 12.5% from 14% the week prior:

Moving along, following the risk-on action & snapback within the indices this past week, we saw quite the rebound within the % of stocks above the 20D, which currently sits at 56% & more so highlights a market that, in the shorter term, has worked off recent oversold conditions & is back toward a more neutral stance:

Although on a more broader timeframe, a different story can be told as despite the rebound, only 34% of stocks remain above the 50D, which still emphasizes a market that remains oversold on a broader timeframe, although in the shorter term, has worked off recent extreme oversold conditions:

And continuing on that note, even with the indices having worked into corrective territory this past week, although with the recent snapback higher, Spooz is only down 6% from all-time highs, we still remain well into ‘extreme fear’ territory.

And just to add some historical context, here’s the Fear-Greed Index overlaid with Spooz:

That said, with March now behind us, positioning tells a much more extreme story than price action alone, as while performance was weak, flows were far worse, with global equities seeing the largest net selling in over a decade and among the most aggressive since ’11, while hedge funds were net sellers for a fourth straight month, cutting exposure at the fastest pace in 13 years.

And more notably, hedge funds have aggressively increased short exposure, pushing their long/short ratio to the most bearish level on record, even exceeding the extremes seen during the Liberation Day selloff.

And tying this into positioning more broadly, the message is reinforced by JPM’s positioning monitor as well, with the 4-week change in their U.S. Tactical Positioning Monitor reaching nearly -3z, marking one of the most bearish readings on record.

As shown in the chart below, moves of this magnitude have historically coincided with periods of extreme de-risking and forced selling, often aligning with or slightly preceding durable lows in the S&P.

This past week was yet another eventful one geopolitically. As the week kicked off, indices initially moved higher following an announcement by Trump that the U.S. was in talks with Iran and negotiating, alongside a suspension of attacks on energy infrastructure to help facilitate a deal. However, as the week progressed, that optimism faded amid Iran’s more hardline rhetoric and a lack of visible progress between the two sides.

On the week, Small-caps ended up being the best performing of the indices, having closed higher by just over 30bps, whereas the Qs were the worst performer, finishing lower by just over 300bps.

- Economic Data for the Coming Week:

In regard to economic data into the upcoming week, it will be a shortened one due to the Friday holiday, but outside of geopolitics, there is still a solid slate of data ahead. The most important release will be the March payrolls report, which is set for Friday & as a reminder, the February report showed a sizable loss of jobs (Although there were several caveats that distorted the headline figure) & in addition, we’ll get a mix of other labor & economic data points scattered throughout the week as well.

Since starting this Substack back in June of ‘23, between individual names / tactical trades / baskets, we have netted a 167.76% return whilst in the same period, the Q’s have returned 59.86% / Spooz has returned 52.16% / Dow has returned 40.17% & Small-caps have returned 39.01%, so nice outperformance against all the indices whilst having a 81.8% win rate, averaging a 28.14% return on realized gains / winners & a 15.49% loss on realized losses / losers.
